Verification and Validation of COMSOL Magnetohydrodynamic Models for Liquid Metal Breeding Blankets Technologies

Liquid metal breeding blankets are extensively studied in nuclear fusion. In the main proposed systems, Water Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) and Dual Coolant (DCLL), liquid flows under an intense transverse magnetic field, for which a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect is produced. The result alteration of all flow features increase pressure drops. Although latter issue can be evaluated with system models, 3D MHD codes extreme importance both design phase safety analyses. To test reliability COMSOL Multiphysics development method verification validation followed. benchmark problems solved regard steady state, fully developed rectangular ducts, non-isothermal flows, spatially varying field two different unsteady turbulent problems, quasi-two-dimensional entering obstacle. computed results show good agreement reference solutions addressed suggesting that used as software to study regimes typical fusion power reactors.
